Growing up on a small mixed farming operation, I started riding horses at the age of 9. I was involved with 4-H and competing in horse shows all over Manitoba, but my real passion was for barrel racing. My parents and friends soon started hauling me to jackpots. When I was ten I was bit by the bug to run early, as I won the first bonanza barrel racing jackpot I had entered. When I was 14 I ran Junior girls barrels in MRCA, and I was one spot away from competing at the finals that year. The next adventure was the Manitoba High School Rodeo Association where I competed for 4 years with many different horses. After High School Rodeo I went to College in Vermillion AB. where I studied Livestock Production. I was not long getting on the Rodeo Team and competed all over Alberta in the College Rodeos.
After college I was blessed to find myself a great career in the Equine Ranching Industry, where I am a Field Compliant Specialist for Wyeth Organics, a division of Pfizer. This made it a little more difficult to compete in the Rodeo world, but I was still able to keep my passion for barrel racing alive with hauling to a few jackpots a year. I have changed horses a few times in the past few years, and I also started to really realize the importance of riding well broke horses, no matter what discipline you are competing in. I found myself looking for more answers and in this journey was able to meet and ride with some really cool people. Through an event in MB called Horse 3, I met a lady named Lee Smith, who has opened my eyes and helped me with my riding, and my horsemanship skills. I was also able to travel to Arizona to Diamond S Ranch, where Lee Smith lives, to ride in a Ray Hunt Clinic. I have learned so much in the past few years and am very excited to be back running competitively this summer, on possibly a new horse of mine.
I am passionate about investing in our future generations. When I was asked if I would consider offering my advice to the youth of today, I was humbled and hesitant. I was not sure I had much to offer when you look at names who are at the top of the Barrel Racing today.
But with encouragement from family and friends, I look forward to working with you, and helping promote safety and advice to the young barrel racers of tomorrow. I hope to share my knowledge of horsemanship, and barrel racing, and to encourage the young ladies to be courageous, gracious, and good leaders for their horse. I hope to help them develop partnership between horse and rider, give the girls focus and direction, but most of all to have fun.
I have been influenced by renowned horsemen such as Ray Hunt, Lee Smith and barrel racers Leslie Schlosser , Judy Myllymaki, along with Elaine and Jim Hyde.
I look forward to meeting everyone in Moose Jaw in May.
