Give Honor Where Honor is Due

Mother’s Day has just passed and Father’s Day is just a couple weeks away.
This is a time to celebrate and honor our parents. These special days are ones in which we can be reminded to do what is important to those who are special in our lives.
God asks us to honor our father and mother. Honor… this carries a weighty definition. To honor our parents is to pay due respect to them, to regard or treat them with respect, to give recognition, to privilege, to credit, to show esteem.
This commandment does not come with conditions. We are commanded to respect our parents, to give recognition, to privilege, to credit and to show esteem to them regardless of whether they are deserving of it or not. This is a principle in the Word of God that will bring good results. It is when we are obedient to what the Word is asking of us, that is when we can ‘rest’ and let Him take care of it all. We do not show respect and honor only if our parents do their required part… we are to sow honor, recognition and privilege to them in faith.
This is a freeing lifestyle to live in… in our marriages, relationships with our children, family or neighbors. When we walk in love, sowing the Love of Jesus, God will take care of the other end of things. It releases us from the result of hurt and offense. So many times, we have been hurt by the ones we love. Our parents are ones who will fail us, by not walking in the way of the Word. However, when we sow our honor in faith, we will see and reap a harvest from it!!
It is time to take time to honor those who have given us life. We could make special effort to pray over our parents and speak words of destiny into their lives. Some other practical ways to show honor to our parents is to make a nice meal for them, take them out for a special meal, write a letter telling them how much you appreciate them, give them a hug, say ’I love you’, find a card that says what you would want to say to them, or set aside some time to do something they enjoy. Give credit to them where they did do a good job. Show unconditional respect. They may not even be receiving of the love we give, but if we are obedient to what our Savior is asking of us, we will receive from Him!!
For God commanded, saying “Honor your father and mother” and “He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.” Matthew 15:4 (NKJV)
Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you. Exodus 20:12
They eye that mocks his father, and scorns obedience to his mother, the ravens of the valley will pick it out, and the young eagles will eat it. Proverbs 30:17
